NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans already have proven theyre better than they were each of the past two years. To take another step forward, the Tennessee Titans need to quit falling behind by double digits on the road. They need to make the needed adjustments quickly with three of their final five games away from home. The Titans fell to 1/3 in road games this season when trailing by double digits, this time after spotting AFC South rival Indianapolis a 21-0 lead before falling 24-17 . Left tackle Taylor Lewan called the slow starts extremely frustrating and not sure what the Titans were doing in the first half against the Colts. Were never going to give up on anything. I think we showed that, Lewan said. But we cant do that because were going to come up short. Playing in the NFL, you cant spot a team 21 points and say, `OK, were going to get it in gear now. So something to learn from. Got to come out faster and play more physical and grow from this. The Titans missed yet another chance at a winning record with their latest slow start, and thats been a constant theme this season. Their lone win came in Week 2 after trailing Detroit 12-0 and 15-3. They trailed in Houston 14-0 before losing 27-20 in Week 4.Since then, theyve had three chances to move above .500 only to lose each time with two of those on the road. They fell behind 16-0 before losing 43-35 at San Diego and cost themselves a chance to stay in second in the AFC South after allowing the Colts to jump out to a 21-0 lead within the first 20 minutes.Titans coach Mike Mularkey said production on third down, both offensively and defensively, has been a common problem in the slow starts. Against the Colts, Tennessee failed to convert on its first three third downs, while the Colts went 3-of-5 in the first half. Mularkey said the frustrating part is the Titans struggle to convert on short yardage.Tennessee also had some other issues. Veteran tight end Delanie Walker drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that backed them out of field goal range in the second quarter, and Mularkey said he told Walker that was a poor decision. Valentino Blake caught a punt at the Tennessee 2 early in the third quarter.Theres no punt that should be fielded inside the 10 yard line by anybody, Mularkey said. And Mularkey said coaches are discussing a possible lineup change after cornerback Perrish Cox struggled against the Colts, including having the third TD go through his hands to Indy receiver T.Y. Hilton on fourth down. Now the Titans (5-6) find themselves needing to win Sunday when they visit Chicago (2-8) just to climb back to .500 before their bye. Mularkey said he addressed what the Titans face with five games left this season with the team Monday morning and compared NFL games to whitewater rafting with each providing a different ride. The team that plays the most consistent is going to come out of this thing and be at the top, Mularkey said. Is that nine wins? Is that 10 wins? Right now nobody knows what that is. I know this team feels it has a very good opportunity ahead of us.The Titans coach believes its not unrealistic to expect Tennessee to win out.Its really about what we do its all about what we do and nobody else, Mularkey said.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL.---Follow Teresa M. TORONTO -- Mariners hitting coach Edgar Martinez is away from the team this weekend so he can watch friend and former teammate Ken Griffey Jr. be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday.Seattles batters seem be faring just fine without him.Hisashi Iwakuma pitched six innings to win his fifth straight start, Nelson Cruz hit his ninth career grand slam and homered twice, and the Mariners matched a season high with 19 hits Saturday in a 14-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.Cruz hit his slam off R.A. The team record is eight by Mike Blowers, Mike Cameron and Alvin Davis.Over his final four at-bats, Cruz came to the plate with 10 runners on base in front of him. The only time in that stretch he didnt have runners on was when he flied out to open the fifth.I dont remember the last time I had that many runners on base, Cruz said. Its always nice to have that chance and to deliver in those situations.Kyle Seager hit a two-run homer and Nori Aoki had two RBI and scored twice to help the Mariners win their third straight, a streak that began with Wednesdays walkoff win over the White Sox.Hopefully, that was the wake-up call we need, Cruz said.Iwakuma (11-6) allowed two runs and four hits.Unbeaten since June 22 at Detroit, he is 5-0 with a 2.50 ERA in his past five outings and 10-2 in 12 starts since May 20.Hes been our most consistent guy all year, theres no doubt, manager Scott Servais said.Wade LeBlanc pitched the final three innings for his first save.Former Mariners players Michael Saunders and Justin Smoak combined for three home runs against their old team, but it was nowhere near enough for the Blue Jays, who gave up a season-worst 14 runs.Saunders hit two solo homers, one off Iwakuma in the sixth and another off LeBlanc in the eighth. It was hiss eighth career multihomer game and third this season.ddddddddddddSaunders, who also connected in Fridays 2-1 loss, matched his career high with 19.Smoak hit a two-run drive off LeBlanc in the eighth, his 11th.Cruzs first homer came after Dickey (7-11) hit consecutive batters to load the bases in the third.Dickey left after the first four batters reached safely in the fourth, his shortest start of the season. He gave up six earned runs, matching a season worst, and seven hits.Dickey has yielded 24 homers this season. Only Kansas Citys Ian Kennedy and Chris Young (26) have allowed more.I felt like I executed a pretty good pitch to Cruz and he did a good job of staying with it, Dickey said.Seattle widened its lead with a five-run sixth, when the first five batters all got hits off reliever Jesse Chavez.Cruz batted with the bases loaded for a second time but grounded into a double play. Seager chased Chavez with a homer to center, his 19th.THE DECIDERIwakuma has received a decision in 17 of his 20 starts.WALK THIS WAYBlue Jays slugger Josh Donaldson walked twice.
