Deciphering swingThe first ball of the day didnt move in the air but tailed back in after pitching. The seam was pointing towards third slip, which should have taken the ball away but it didnt. James Anderson is a great bowler because of his masterful wrist and one could easily assume that the ball in question came back in because he flicked his wrist at the point of delivery. But perhaps that wasnt the case, for an identical ball (same wrist and seam position) last night went away from Ajinkya Rahane. Whats happening here? Is trusting the seam position to decipher the swing a bad choice? Anderson has a slightly open action for an outswing bowler and the moment he doesnt finish the action nicely, the ball doesnt move away in the air or off the pitch. It tends to happen at the start of a new spell. Remember the first ball after lunch on the first day? It drifted on to Virat Kohlis pads even when Anderson had 7 fielders on the off-side.Kohlis footwork on the driveWhen Kohli started as a young first-class batsman, he had a really short and across front-foot stride. He worked around it by playing the ball really late. But once in a while, he would find himself in a tangle because of the nature of his stride. If theres one thing that Kohli has changed it is his head position in the stance and that has not only led to a better understanding of where his off stump is but also allowed him to have a long forward stride as opposed to the earlier short and across stride. Nowadays, its worth watching his front-foot defence and drives from the square angle, for it reminds you of his evolution as a batsman.Sahas Moeen misjudgementWriddhiman Saha was lbw to Moeen Ali after went back to a ball that was not particularly short. There is something about Moeen that encourages you to go back, for he bowls a flatter trajectory and the moment a batsman sees the flatter line, he gets tempted to stay back. This error of judgement tends to happen more often when either you are new at the crease or Moeen is at the start of a new spell. Shami finds the sweet spotAlastair Cooks trigger movement is really pronounced and takes him deep inside the crease. Whenever you see a batsman with such a trigger movement, its believed that if you pitch the ball fuller, you will have him in a spot of bother. In theory it looks very simple but when you look at Cooks Test record, you realise that it isnt as simple after all. There are a couple of aspects to Cooks technique - since he is acutely aware of his off stump, he leaves the ball really well. So, if you pitch full and outside off, he is equipped to let them go. Then if you bowl a little too straight, you end up playing to his strengths, for he is really strong off his legs. Since his front-foot stride is either marginal or non-existent, hes also mindful of the fact that pushing hard with hands would land him in trouble. But once in a while, early on in his tenure, he will get an ideal delivery that dismisses him. Mohammed Shami found that length and line on the delivery that saw the back of Cook.Roots response to variable bounceThe first ball of the seventh over stayed really low and Joe Root was fortunate to get his bat down in time. Once that happens to you, you try and play everything off the front foot with a vertical bat but its easier said than done against bowlers operating close to 90 mph. It is also tough to forget about years of conditioning with regards to your response against the short ball. Root decided to do something spectacular on the following ball - he stepped down the pitch and flicked it for four. Its rare to see that in the seventh over of a new Test innings but the idea was to be proactive instead of waiting for the next ball to stay low. Roger Maris Cardinals Jersey . Louis Blues. ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Phillip Walker threw two touchdown passes, Temples defense stuffed Navys running game and the Owls claimed their first American Athletic Conference title with a 34-10 victory Saturday. After Temple (10-3) scored touchdowns on its first three possessions, protecting the 21-0 lead became substantially easier when No. 19 Navy (9-3, No. 20 AP) lost standout quarterback Will Worth to a second-quarter ankle injury.Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said Worth is done for the season, along with running backs Toneo Gulley and Darryl Bonner, both of whom left with first-half injuries.Although the defeat took Navy out of the running for the Cotton Bowl, the Midshipmen are expected to play in the Armed Forces Bowl after facing Army next Saturday. The Owls extended their winning streak to seven and earned their first league title since finishing atop the Middle American Conference in 1967.It showed we have a really good team that is capable of doing a lot of good things, said Walker, who went 16 for 25 for 199 yards.Temple lost to Houston in last years AAC Championship game. This time, the Owls dominated from the outset. Not only did Temple open with TD drives of 75, 59 and 70 yards, but the defense quashed a Navy attack that was averaging 61 points over its previous three games. They just played better. It wasnt a magic wand, Niumatalolo said. They just hit us in the mouth and we hadnt been hit in the mouth for a long time. Normally, we hit other people in the mouth. To Temples credit, they hit us in the mouth. We were dazed the whole game. Its like they hit us with an overhand right. The Midshipmen had scored on 34 of 38 drives -- including 33 touchdowns -- before being denied on their first three possessions by Temple. Worth was injured at the end of the third drive and did not return. That spelled doom for an offense that produced more than 500 yards in each of its last three games. Navy finished with 306 yards, 168 on the ground.Backup quarterback Zach Abey went 7 for 13 for 104 yards and two interceptions.ddddddddddddI missed some reads, wish I had some plays back, he said. The result was the end of Navys 15-game home winning streak.Middle linebacker Jarred Alwan led the Owls defense with 13 tackles, and Sean Chandler contributed eight tackle and forced a fumble.Temple took the suspense out of the game with an early show of offensive firepower. After Walker completed a 13-yard pass for Keith Kirkwood on fourth-and-7 from the Navy 28, Jahad Thomas ran for a 15-yard score.A 22-yard touchdown pass to Ventell Bryant made it 14-0, and Walker followed a Navy turnover with a perfectly thrown long pass that Kirkwood caught in stride for a 56-yard score. The injury to Worth occurred on Navys next possession. They just played better than we did, Niumatalolo said. It wasnt schematic. They just beat the crap out of us.After falling behind 24-3 at halftime, the Midshipmen got a 47-yard run from Abey during a drive late in the third quarter that ended with the quarterback scoring from the Temple 1.A 42-yard field goal by Aaron Boumerhi with 10:17 left ended any hope of a Navy comeback.THE TAKEAWAYTemple: The Owls played exceptionally well in proving to be a worthy conference champion. Even before the injuries to Navys backfield, Temples defense successfully tackled the challenge of slowing down Navys formidable offense.Navy: The Midshipmen had it all going for them: Momentum on offense, home-field advantage and the incentive of playing in the Cotton Bowl. But Navy wasnt sharp enough to put a dent in a Temple defense that had allowed a total of 10 points in its previous three games.UP NEXTTemple: The Owls expect to learn their bowl destination on Sunday.Navy: The annual Army-Navy game will be held in Baltimore on Saturday. The Midshipmen will be looking for their 15th straight win in the series. ' ' '
