LOS ANGELES -- Elijah Stewart isnt sure why USC isnt gaining much national recognition, but the Trojans guard had plenty of highlight-reel worthy shots, blocks and crowd-pleasing plays on Sunday night.Stewart scored 26 points and added seven 3-pointers and a career-tying four blocks in USCs 93-67 win over Pepperdine. The Trojans set a school single-game record with 14 blocks and improved to 9-0.Its Trojans best start since they went 16-0 in 1971.USC still is unranked in the polls, despite five teams in the rankings owning two losses. Asked if he feels the Trojans get enough recognition, Stewart said: No. Not at all. We were supposed to be last last year in the Pac-(12), and I think they picked us kind of last this year. Like I said at Pac-12 media day, if you could tell the future, youd probably work for the government.USC actually was predicted to finish seventh this season in the conferences media poll.Jeremy Major led Pepperdine (4-6) with 19 points and Chris Reyes added 13. Pepperdine shot just 38.2 percent from the field.Jordan McLaughlin added 18 points for USC and made all seven of his shots, Chimezie Metu scored 11 and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Nick Rakocevic and Shaqquan Aaron added 13 apiece for the Trojans. Rakocevic had a career high in points and rebounds (nine).USC ran out to an 11-2 lead and never looked back. The Trojans led 48-30 at halftime after shooting 53.3 percent from the field. The Waves have lost five consecutive games.Finals. (Lets) get to finals and clear our heads a little bit, Pepperdine coach Marty Wilson said. Weve got to see what were not doing because were just in a funk right now. Each player could do more, whether its play hard, take care of the ball or push the ball harder. Weve got to do a better job competing defensively.BIG PICTUREPepperdine: The Waves are still trying to find their way without injured players Amadi Udenyi (Achilles), Kameron Edwards (jaw) and others. If the Waves hope to shake the non-conference losses before the West Coast Conference begins on Dec. 29 at Gonzaga.USC: The Trojans could work their way into the national rankings and garner more publicity for their undefeated season, possibly leap-frogging several two-loss teams. USCs winning ways in the preseason will be especially beneficial when the Pac-12 season begins Dec. 28 at Oregon State.QUOTE OF THE GAMEWe respect it. The players and coaches at USC have a rich tradition in all sports here. The basketball team has been a little bit of a roller coaster the last five or six decades with great players, great coaches, great teams. Were just trying to do our part to make the people that have been here before proud, and to say, `hey, theyre fun to watch.Weve had a lot of alumni reach out to us, a lot of former basketball players come to our games and send us emails and letters in the mail.-- Andy Enfield on USCs best start since 1971CARRYING ONThis was the second game USC played without starter Bennie Boatwright, who is out six weeks with a knee injury. They were also without forward Charles Buggs, who sustained a leg injury in warmups that Enfield didnt believe to be serious. Eight USC players accounted for all but eight minutes of the game. Walk-on Kurt Karis scored his first career points as he made a pair of free throws in playing four minutes.UP NEXTPepperdine is just two games into a difficult six-game road stretch, but its next game isnt until Dec. 20 at Louisiana. Thats followed by games at Montana, Gonzaga and Portland.USC is in the middle of a three-game home stretch at the Galen Center, where it can extend its undefeated season with a win over Troy on Saturday and Cornell on Dec. 19. Mickey Arthur has warned his Pakistan players they will have to raise their game considerably if they are to defeat England in the third Test at Edgbaston.Arthur, the Pakistan coach, admitted that he was really disappointed by his sides performance in defeat at Old Trafford and questioned whether some of them felt they had achieved their objectives with victory at Lords. Now he has urged them to replicate the warrior performance they demonstrated in that game at Lords and insisted England have a vulnerability that can be exploited. Were going to have to raise our game considerably from Old Trafford, Arthur said. I was really disappointed with our performance at Old Trafford. Really disappointed. There are credible losses and there are losses when you lie down and were steam rolled. Old Trafford was clearly that.At Lords we were upbeat and played with real spirit. We had that edge. I told the guys I thought we were warriors at Lords. But we were completely the opposite at Old Trafford.I wasnt sure if it was as if we had reached our goal and our goal was to come and win a Test and then take your foot off the pedal.Part of Pakistans problem at Old Trafford was the balance of their side. With just four frontline bowlers playing in back-to-back Tests, Pakistan looked a weary side as England amassed a huge first-innings total. But it seems they have given up on the possibility of Mohammad Hafeez, who remains suspended from bowling in international cricket until he is cleared in an ICC test, taking any part in the series with a ball. Were very keen to get Hafeez back but we realise that its a delicate process, Arthur said. We did some really good work with him during the tour game in Worcester. We got the spin coach Carl Crowe - who worked with Sunil Narine - to work with him for two days. Were confident that he is getting back to where he needs to be and that gives us so much balance, especially with our left-armers, as suddenly we have an offspinner who can hit those footmarks as well.Well keep chipping away at his action and Im confident that, if everything goes well, we can have him tested before the one-dayers. Then that will give uus another string to our bow in the ODI series.ddddddddddddBut while he conceded the current side had improvements to make, he will resist calls to select Umar Akmal or Ahmed Shehzad until they can demonstrate that they buy into the values of the side. Thats been a burning question for a long time, Arthur said. I took over once Umar and Ahmed had been left out of the squad and clearly they were left out for the right reasons. Im hoping they still want to play for their country. But they need to prove to us that they want to be part of our set-up.As Ive always said there are no passengers in our set-up. Theyve got to be part of our set-up and buy into what we want to do with the cricket team otherwise it is irrelevant how good they are. Were going in a direction at pace and we dont need anyone pulling us down.Saying that, Ive had a very brief conversation with Ahmed and not had any conversation for Umar and that will be something for later down the line. I think theyre very exciting cricketers but sometimes we need more than that.Arthur remained confident that Pakistan can retake the lead in the series at Edgbaston. As well as having analysed the reasons for defeat in Manchester, he felt there were faultiness within the England team that can be exploited. Most noticeably, he suggested their batting is over-reliant upon Alastair Cook and Joe Root and that, if Pakistan can strike with the new ball, they could put the likes of James Vince and Gary Ballance under pressure.Vince and Ballance are quality players, Arthur said. But at this level confidence is such an important thing. They clearly know when they walk out to bat that they are playing for their Test places. So that provides another level of pressure. Its not just the opposition running in and bowling a cricket ball at you. Suddenly that pressure is intensified as theyre playing for their places as well.We feel if we can get into them with the new ball weve got a real good chance. Clearly Cook and Root are the beacon of England batting at moment. ' ' '
