The Wrestling Federation of India has publicly and clearly backed Narsingh Yadav, who has tested positive for banned substances, and said it hopes he will represent India at the Rio Olympics. We believe Narsingh has been unfairly targeted, WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said at a press conference in New Delhi on Monday.Narsingh had tested positive in tests conducted by the National Anti-Doping Agency, which announced its findings on Sunday. NADAs inquiry process is being conducted by its Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel, which is next due to meet on Wednesday, and Sharan said he hoped the inquiry would clear him.The revelation put Narsinghs participation in the Rio Olympics -- where he is in the 74kg category -- in doubt. The details of the drug test will only be revealed upon the end of the appeals process, as per the NADA protocol. It is, however, understood that the alleged substance Narsingh has tested positive for is the S1. anabolic agent methyldienolone, which is known to lead to an increase in muscle and weight. It is a choice of substance found more often in the positive tests of weightlifters.Sharan said the director-general of the Sports Authority of India had heard about a threat to Narsingh and asked him to practise elsewhere. Narsingh, Sharan said, had replied that he would rather practise in Sonepat because the coaches were there, as were others going to the Olympics and he would get sparring partners.Sonepat is a kushti (wrestling) hub, the wrestlers are from nearby areas, Haryana, railways, Delhi, Sharan said. However, I would think looking back that maybe the DG SAI was right at the time. Something like this has not happened elsewhere in India, and maybe we didnt take the threat issue that seriously.Explaining the sequence of events, Sharan said: When Narsingh let us know on July 19 about the positive dope test, we immediately informed the ministry and the government. There is a very good team that has been appointed to monitor the situation. He said the case of Sandeep Yadav, Narsinghs roommate who also tested positive, would be dealt with at the same time and they expect the NADA judgement to be delivered on Wednesday.Sharan spoke of Narsinghs exemplary record, having participated in more than 50 international and national events, and many dope tests. The people in NADA in fact tell us that he is one of those athletes who doesnt have a moments hesitation in being tested if he is asked. When he says he hasnt taken any drug or contaminated substance, I will believe him. It is our duty to look after our players and make them feel secure.Asked if this development meant that India had lost its quota in the Olympics, Sharan said the WFI had been in touch with the United World Wrestling and the IOA. We asked them to give us a chance, and pointed out that the investigation was under way.We are not saying its a conspiracy; Narsingh has made this complaint in a written statement. My personal view is also that 120 athletes have qualified for Rio and he is the only one to have been tested positive and that too with a drug which his sport has nothing to do with. It is for muscle development and his muscles are fine.Reacting to the controversy, Sushil Kumar tweeted that the dope scandal surrounding Narsingh, who was picked ahead of him for the Rio Olympics, is unfortunate and that he will always support his fellow grapplers.very unfortunate 2 see the Wrestling go through this. I hv given my life to ot & wl always support fellow wrestlers pic.twitter.com/CUsbIGf8Gb- Sushil Kumar (@WrestlerSushil) July 25, 2016Vijay Goel, the sports minister, said that Narsingh would be given a fair chance to defend himself, and his?dope case would be dealt as per international rules with the strict implementation of the WADA code.?NADA is an autonomous body established under the WADA code to promote clean sports and check doping, he said. In Narsinghs case, we will ensure that WADA code is implemented. We are committed to the WADA code. There will be justice under the rules and beyond that there is nothing much we can do in this case. When news broke on Thursday evening that Liberty Media were on course to take over Formula One in a deal said to be worth £6.4 billion, those of us who have been around for a couple of years felt a resounding sense of deja vu.At the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix, John Malone was named as a possible purchaser of the sport, either through Liberty Global (a sister company of Liberty Media) or via Discovery Communications -- Malone has sizeable stakes in both businesses.Malones Liberty Global, which Forbes describes as a cable and telecom giant, was named as a possible purchaser, I wrote two years ago, as was Discovery Communications, in which Malone has a sizeable stake. Both Liberty Global and Discovery Communications are named as prospective buyers of LBHIs [Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc] 15 percent, making it all but certain that Malone will have a degree of influence over Formula One sooner rather than later. But August 2014 was not the first time Malone appeared as a possible purchaser of the sport -- in February of that year ESPN ran an in-depth look at Malones business interests and connections with a view to a possible F1 takeover later that year. From that February 2014 piece: In the world of the super-rich, everyones connected. And John Malone, the American media mogul currently said to be interested in acquiring CVC Capital Partners stake in Formula One, is no exception. While CEO of Tele-Communications Inc (TCI), Malone worked with one Leo Hindery, currently promoter of the forthcoming - eventually - New Jersey Grand Prix. And over the decades spent doing deals in the world of cable television Malone was often at loggerheads with Rupert Murdoch, a fellow TV mogul who has harboured ambitions of F1 ownership. In 2005, Malone bought a 32 percent stake in News Corp - half of which were voting shares - in what was a hostile but legal move that eventually saw Malone and Murdoch trade the News Corp shares for the DirecTV satellite network in a tax-free deal. It was a loss of face for Murdoch, who had spent six years fighting to acquire DirecTV.As a businessman, Malone sounds like the kindd of man Bernie Ecclestone would approve of.dddddddddddd Both men found the lure of profits and negotiations alluring from an early age, earning money while their peers were otherwise occupied with the whimsy of childhood. Both men are responsible for growing businesses they did not create while negotiating the sort of contracts that led to untold riches both personal and corporate. Both have an aversion to tax.For the past two-and-a-half years, Malone has kept an eye on Formula One and on the potential opportunities the sport can afford him for both profit and content for the impressive network infrastructure his company currently controls. But he has not been disengaged from the world of motorsport either -- Liberty Global bought a majority shareholding in Formula E in March 2015.Malones approach with Formula One is said to be a two-part process, with Liberty Media aiming to acquire an initial minority stake in the sport before gaining overall control with a later-dated purchase. There are reports -- via Skys Mark Kleinman, who originally broke the story -- that Chase Carey, a former DirecTV and News Corporation executive, is being lined up for the eventual Chairman role. Given the notoriously fractured relationship between Malone and News Corps Rupert Murdoch, it would appear that the selection of Carey as a future F1 boss has been made with the deliberate intention of upsetting Malones boardroom nemesis. In a 2008 profile called The Best of Enemies Vanity Fair magazine wrote of the pair: the Murdoch-Malone relationship is among the most internecine in business history. It is a testament to the indomitableness of these two men, if not to the entire human spirit, that Malone and Murdoch are still standing and in relative good humour after their struggles.Which begs the question -- does Malone want F1 for its potential profitability and content delivery, or is this just the latest move in a multi-decade power play between two international media moguls?
